DESCRIPTION:The Confessions\, composed by the bishop of Hippo in the late
fourth century CE\, is often claimed to be the first Western autobiography
  – but it is not the first\, and the autobiographical passages constitut
e only a small percentage of the whole. It is\, however\, one of the most
spiritually creative and intellectually original works ever written. How\,
then\, should we read this anomalous work? And why?
