DESCRIPTION:We have developed various state-of-the-art atomic force micros
cope techniques including an ultra-low noise system with which we have dem
onstrated unprecedented resolution (90 pm) and force sensitivity (1 pN) in
aqueous environments. These techniques have enabled us to explore a rang
e of biological systems from well-defined single lipid bilayers through to
complex natural adhesives deposited by multicellular organisms. I will hi
ghlight our work at these two extremes of complexity. \n\n
