DESCRIPTION:After a brief introduction to galaxy spectral synthesis\, I wi
 ll describe different recent developments in the interpretation of the ult
 raviolet\, optical and infrared emission from galaxies in terms of constra
 ints on physical parameters\, such as star formation history\, metallicity
  and dust content and spatial distribution.  I will investigate the relati
 ve merits of different types of photometric and spectroscopic observations
  to constrain galaxy physical parameters and conclude by mentioning some c
 urrent challenges of the spectral synthesis of galaxies.\n
