DESCRIPTION:This paper gives an analytical and critical overvi
ew of the different ways in which historiography h
as approached the historical relationship between
veterans and Fascism during the interwar period. I
argue that\, until now\, the different explanator
y models employed by historians have not resolved
the conundrum of the existing link between veteran
s and Fascism. After highlighting the importance o
f clarifying this historical issue\, I will critic
ally explore different theoretical and methodologi
cal approaches employed by historians\, from socia
l and political history to cultural history. These
different approaches include: the paradigm of the
  ‘brutalization’ thesis\; the identitary/anthropol
ogical approach\; the studies on war culture\; the
focus on disarmament\, demobilization and reinteg
ration processes (DDR)\; and on cultural demobiliz
ation. While pointing at the weaknesses of all the
se historiographical options\, I will devote parti
cular attention to two ways of analysis that can p
rovide further insights on the relationship betwee
n veterans and fascism\, namely the comparative an
alysis of fascistization processes and transnation
al history. In order to show the suitability of th
ese methodologies\, I will give some examples from
my own empirical research\, particularly on the h
istory of the Francoist veterans of the Spanish Ci
vil War. With this paper\, therefore\, I will unde
rline the need of introducing innovative approache
s to understand the crucial\, albeit highly comple
x\, connection between violent war experiences and
  fascism.
