DESCRIPTION:Ring rolling is an industrial bulk metal forming p
rocess for producing ring-shaped components of typ
ical diameter 1-3m. Many of the final components s
 uch as turbo-machinery casings\, flanges\, bearing
s etc. have a shaped cross-section and yet the con
ventional process either produces ‘plain’ rectangu
 lar cross-section rings\, wasting material\, or re
quires expensive part-specific tooling to achieve
a nearer to net shape ring. I will be presenting r
esearch I've carried out into ‘flexible’ ring roll
ing using a moving pair of radial rollers to achie
ve a shaped ring – akin to CNC machining. Such a p
rocess has complex mechanics and three key modes o
f deformation have been identified and analysed by
an upper bound plasticity method\, FEA and experi
ments on a model material. There appears to be an
inherent limit on the range of geometries achievab
le because of difficulty controlling flow in axial
  and circumferential directions. Initial experimen
tal research suggest that both a) toolpath b) addi
 tional tooling/constraints can potentially increas
e this range of shapes\, ultimately making it a mo
 re viable industrial process.
