ise in diverse areas\, such as sport and music and seek to apply it to edu
cation\, particularly to classroom teaching. \n\nChallenging the widely-he
ld belief that excellence is the result of innate ability\, Gordon Stobart
 ’s research\, published in his new book\, _The Expert Learner_\, shows h
ow ability is developed\nthrough applied learning and deliberate practice.
\n\nDrawing on studies about expertise\, _The Expert Learner_\nhighlights
the importance of:\n\n* Providing opportunities and support to develop ski
lls\n* Being motivated to succeed\n* Undergoing extensive deliberate pract
ice\n* Building powerful mental models to handle and organise information\
n* Receiving continuous and effective feedback to\nimprove performance\n*
Developing self-regulation to monitor performance\n\n“If I were to recom
mend just one book that all teachers\, parents\, employers and politicians
who are interested in education should read\, it would be this one. Not o
nly is it full of engaging stories\, underpinned by important research\, b
ut it goes to the very heart of what it is to be a successful learner and
 effective teacher.”\n\nProfessor Mary James\, University of Cambridge\,
