DESCRIPTION:This is the fifth of a lecture series established to honour th
e outstanding contribution of Antony Hewish to the development of radio as
tronomy.\n\nThe physicists who founded radio astronomy carried out fundame
ntal experiments with modest instruments that led to the discoveries of th
e cosmological evolution of radio sources\, quasars\, the microwave backgr
ound\, and pulsars. This tradition has continued\, especially in the micr
owave background\, where small groups still do fundamental experiments wit
h modest instruments. The development of this field will be described up
to the latest results of the Planck satellite and those of the BICEP2 expe
riment\, which if confirmed push the cosmic clock back to 10-38 seconds af
ter the Big Bang\; and the future of experimental radio astronomy in the e
ra of megaprojects will be discussed in the light of the current renaissan
ce in low frequency experimental radio astronomy.
