DESCRIPTION:When a group acts on a topological space\, it is o
ften useful to be able to find the closed orbits f
or the action. If the group is algebraic and the s
pace is an affine variety\, then the Hilbert-Mumfo
rd Theorem is very helpful tool for doing this\, b
ut it only works in certain settings. In this talk
I'll present a new version of the theorem which w
orks more widely and I'll illustrate it with some
examples from linear algebra. The ideas behind the
new result form part of a wider programme of deve
loping "rationality" tools in Geometric Invariant
Theory\, and I will also explore this if I have ti
me.\n
