DESCRIPTION:We construct an invariant manifold of the equations of molecul
ar dynamics corresponding to some far-from-equilibrium motions. The manifo
ld is independent of the material: it is exactly the same manifold whether
one is solving these equations for air\, water or steel. As we explain\,
the Boltzmann and (properly formulated) Langevin equations inherit version
s of this manifold\, as well as all of continuum mechanics. There is incre
asing evidence that there may be some kind of relatively simple "statistic
al mechanics" on this manifold. Joint work with Kaushik Dayal and Stefan M
 ueller.\n\nhttp://www.maths.cam.ac.uk/postgrad/cca/oxbridgepde2014.html
