 ng FRS\n\nMagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is rout
 inely used in hospitals to image internal structur
 e and blood flow within the human body.  Research 
 has shown that it is possible to harness these tec
 hniques to study non-biological systems\, with man
 y applications across the physical sciences and en
 gineering.  Professor Lynn Gladden will explain ho
 w processes occurring within optically opaque obje
 cts can be revealed\, from imaging flow fields in 
 plant cells to mapping chemical conversion within 
 catalytic reactors.  Recent advances enable bespok
 e implementations of the MRI method to be applied 
 to ever more challenging systems\, providing insig
 hts which cannot be obtained using any other measu
 rement technique. \n\nProfessor Lynn Gladden leads
  research activities at the Magnetic Resonance Res
 earch Centre at the University of Cambridge.  Her 
 group develops methods that advance our understand
 ing of processes that lie at the heart of many tec
 hnologies in the energy and pharmaceutical sectors
 .  She was awarded the 2014 Bakerian Lecture for h
 er work in the development of magnetic resonance t
 echniques to study multi-component adsorption\, di
 ffusion\, flow and reaction processes.\n\nThe Bake
 rian lecture is the Royal Society's premier lectur
 e in the physical sciences. It is delivered annual
 ly at the Royal Society in London and is accompani
 ed by a medal and a gift of £1\,000.
