DESCRIPTION:Condensed matter physics is following atomic physics in moving
from observation of quantum states to their control\, initially via varia
bles such as external magnetic fields\, but more recently using tailored o
ptical and microwave pulses and\, at the level of a few atoms\, using elec
trical fields generated by scan probe tips. These developments\, which als
o include deterministic doping of semiconductors\, will enable both new sc
ience and novel information processing schemes. The results are contrasted
with those for control of defect spins.\n\n[1] P. T. Greenland et al.\, N
