DESCRIPTION:Ultraluminous infrared galaxies have been claimed to be a sign
ificant component of the star formation at z>1. The most luminous of thes
e galaxies are detectable as sources in the submm wavebands with instrumen
ts such as Herschel or SCUBA-2. I will discuss recent work with SCUBA-2 a
nd ALMA to investigate the properties of this population\, the physical pr
ocesses driving their extreme luminosities and their relation to galaxy po
 pulations at the present day.\n
