DESCRIPTION:The cellular world includes a myriad of self-propelled microor
 ganisms\, including many bacteria\, spermatozoa\, ciliates\, and plankton.
In this talk\, we start by providing an introduction to the fluid-based l
ocomotion of cells. We then focus on deriving optimal modes of locomotion.
Considering the various propulsion mechanisms observed in nature (flagell
a vs. cilia\; prokaryotes vs. eukaryotes)\, we mathematically and computat
ionally compute the cell kinematics achieving propulsion\, or fluid transp
ort\, with minimal energetic cost\, and compare our results with biologica
 l observations.
