DESCRIPTION:The first substantial amount of classical Persian
poetry dates from the 11th century. A large part
of the poetry that has come down to us has been co
mposed for the Ghaznavid and Saljuq dynasties (11t
 h-12th century)\, who ruled semi-independently ove
r large territories of the eastern caliphate\, in
Khurasan and Central Asia. The poetry of this peri
od has been of vital importance for the developmen
t of a flourishing poetical tradition in the centu
ries to follow. I would like to focus in the lectu
re on the representations of court life in Ghaznav
id and Saljuq court poetry\, in particular on the
ways Islamic and pre-Islamic feasts come to the f
ore in Ghaznavid and Saljuq poetry.
