DESCRIPTION:This one-day workshop will explore the particular relationship
s between Naples\, violence and religion in the early modern period and la
ter historiography. Commentators frequently remarked on a cruelty or viole
nce in baroque Naples and its art. This was occasionally ascribed to somet
hing 'Spanish'. How are we to understand the paradigm of violence in early
modern Naples? Are there better models than that of violence to interpret
the religious beliefs\, practices and art of early modern Naples? These q
uestions will be explored through papers from emerging scholars from sever
 al different disciplines.
