DESCRIPTION:In this talk we will present a deterministic particle-in-cell
(PIC) method with linear transformations of the particles that help remove
the noise traditionally observed with particle schemes. In practice it is
necessary to remap the particles from time to time on a regular grid to a
void excessively deforming their shapes\, therefore the method can be seen
as a development of the (quasi-eulerian) FSL scheme introduced by Denavit
in 1972. In theory however the method is shown to converge without remapp
ings. Deforming the particles can thus be thought of as a way to significa
ntly lower the remapping frequency that is needed in FSL schemes. Moreover
\, a robust dynamical remapping criterion will be presented that is based
on the a priori error analysis. Numerical 1d1v simulations involving bench
mark test cases and halo formation in an initially mismatched thermal shee
t beam will be shown\, that demonstrate some advantages of our Linearly-Tr
ansformed PIC (LTPIC) scheme over the classical PIC and FSL methods. The c
hoice of appropriate charge deposition schemes will also be discussed.
