DESCRIPTION:*ABSTRACT*\nThe school systems of all developing c
ountries have expanded rapidly over the last decad
 e. The quest to have every child in basic educatio
n by 2015 (A Millennium Development Goal) has galv
anised governments and international agencies to t
ake action. However the parallel challenge to prov
ide sufficient\, well educated\, teachers lags som
e way behind. In many developing countries teacher
  supply\, retention\, education and training are v
erging on crisis. In this context Bob Moon will ar
gue that a radical reform of teacher education str
uctures and systems will be necessary if the life
chances of young people are to be improved. In par
ticular he will suggest that the domination of Eur
opean and North American orthodoxies towards teach
er preparation are fostering conservative resistan
ce to change. In making this analysis he will sugg
est new strategies that need to be embraced\, incl
uding a rethink of the research priorities current
ly favoured by international agencies. He will als
o suggest ways in which the UK Higher Education se
ctor could play a more significant role in respond
ing to the challenge to make global education syst
ems more equitable and just. The presentation will
draw on work from the ten country Teacher Educati
on in Sub-Saharan Africa (TESSA) programme that Bo
b Moon founded and directed as well as his most re
cent book\, ‘Teacher Education and The Challenge o
f Development’\, which was published this year in
the series Education\, Poverty and International D
evelopment edited by Madeleine Arnot and Chris Col
 clough.\n\n\n*BRIEF BIOGRAPHY*\nBob Moon was a sec
ondary teacher and headteacher of two urban Britis
h secondary comprehensive schools before moving in
to the higher education sector. He was appointed P
rofessor of Education at the Open University in 19
88 with the task of developing all aspects of teac
her education. His projects have twice won\, for t
he OU\, The Queen’s Anniversary Award for Higher E
ducation\, most recently in 2009 with The ten coun
try ‘Teacher Education in Sub-Saharan Africa’ (TES
SA) programme\, an initiative now reaching half a
million teachers in all parts of the continent. Bo
b Moon has been an adviser to many national govern
 ments and international organisations\, (including
  OECD\, DFID\, EU\, UNESCO\, UNICEF\, UNRWA and Th
e World Bank) He has written extensively on curric
ulum teaching and international aspects of educati
on. His most recent books include ‘The Power of Pe
dagogy’\, with the late Professor Jenny Leach and
