ent ways of thinking about sovereignty\, territoriality and political econ
omy. The federal idea in the later 1940s and 1950s was used by imperial po
wers to stave off decolonisation\, but it was\nalso supported by local pol
itical actors. This paper will take the mooted east African federation as
 its case study.\n
