DESCRIPTION:In Sebastiano Serlio’s second of seven books on Ar
chitecture\, “On Perspective” published in 1545\,
he described three types of theatrical scenes: the
tragic\, the comic and the satiric. Of these\, th
e first two were urban\, comprising public spaces
framed by buildings\, and highly influential in Re
naissance theatre set design. The treatise also de
scribes the characters and deeds that would be exp
ected in each city type and as such remains a comp
elling theory on the nature of urban reality. The
lecture will discuss the continuing relevance of S
erlio’s tragic and comic scenes to urban design\,
as illustrated by contemporary projects including
 several by David Kohn Architects.
