DESCRIPTION:(Free for members\, £2 for non-members)\n\nArchime
des was very proud of his Theorem relating the sur
face area of a sphere to the area of a cylinder.
He asked for this to be inscribed on his tombstone
. I will show that his pride was justified and th
at his theorem has had a major impact on the mathe
matics of recent times\, with surprising connectio
ns to such things as the isoperimetric inequality
and the Hodge signature theorem.
