DESCRIPTION:There is an increasing amount of 'open data' being made availa
ble to the public\, which may be of use for researchers in DIAL or Service
engineering (as well as others in the IfM). This includes fairly static
reference data (such as geographic information about locations of schools\
, bus stops\, local businesses)\, as well as live data feeds about current
activities (e.g. data feeds from the Highways Agency about congestion on
major roads). Recently\, there have been major initiatives by governments
  (e.g. data.gov in the US\, data.gov.uk in the UK\, publicdata.eu in the E
 U) to make data that has been collected by government agencies at taxpayer
s' expense available in open formats\, to open up it up for new innovative
applications and services. At the same time\, W3C (the World Wide Web Co
nsortium) has \nbeen developing standards that enable interoperable frame
works for not only exchanging and querying such data\, but doing so in a w
ay that preserves the semantics (i.e. the meaning of the data)\, so that i
t is possible to make meaningful connections across datasets from differen
t organizations. The major web search engines are also embracing semantic
web technology through initiatives such as schema.org\, which rewards man
ufacturers and businesses with the prospect of more \nprominent\, richer
listings in search results\, in exchange for annotating their web pages wi
th semantic markup that is easier for computers to process and extract the
meanings. Furthermore\, there is an opportunity for companies to make us
e of open data and semantic web tools together with their own enterprise d
ata\, to enable a richer analysis of the performance of their business or
to develop ideas for new value-added services\, especially as mobile apps
etc. The aim of this talk is to provide an introduction to Linked Data /
\nOpen Data and the standards and tools that are available and to give a b
rief demonstration of their practical use.\n
