DESCRIPTION:One fundamental invariant of an elliptic curve E is its Mordel
 l-Weil rank\, and there are many open questions and fascinating conjecture
 s surrounding it. I will try to motivate the study of Selmer groups of ell
 iptic curves\, as well as talk about why they help us better understand ra
 nks. After that I will discuss some results on the growth of Selmer ranks 
 in certain cyclic extensions of number fields.
