DESCRIPTION:I will discuss stochastic transitions in a bistable biochemica
l system of trans-activating molecules on a hexagonal lattice. Kinetic Mon
te Carlo simulations demonstrated that the steady state of the system is c
ontrolled by the diffusion\, and size of the reactor. In considered exampl
e\, in small reactor the system remains inactive. In larger domain\, howev
er\, the system activates spontaneously at some place of the reactor and t
hen the activity wave propagates until whole domain becomes active. The ex
pected time to\nactivation grows exponentially with the diffusion coeffici
ent.\n\nI will interpret these results by analytical considerations of a s
impler bistable system\, which evolution is equivalent to the one dimensio
 nal birth and death process.\n
