DESCRIPTION:This workshop is aimed at PhD students. If you wou
ld like to attend please email cca@maths.cam.ac.uk
.\n\nThis workshop will give you a sense of the ma
thematical problems that are being met by mathemat
icians working in industry. It will also illustrat
e how\, in a non-academic setting\, mathematical r
esearch is communicated to stakeholders and custom
ers.\n\nPresenters: Dr David Allwright\, Oxford Un
iversity\, and Dr Robert Lees\, Smith Institute.\n
Facilitators: Other members of DAMTP to be confirm
ed.\n\nDay 1: You will be put into groups and pres
ented with a small selection of mathematical probl
ems from industry to work on and try to solve. The
se problems have previously been worked upon by te
ams of industrial mathematicians\, and their work
will be presented to you to familiarise you with p
otential solutions and how successful those soluti
ons were.\n\nSeveral talks will be given to explai
n each of the problems and to summarize the lines
of enquiry that the industrial mathematicians took
to solve these problems\, along with the lines of
enquiry that remain unexplored.\n\nDay 2: There w
ill be no presentations on this day. Instead\, you
should work in your groups to consider what lines
of attack are possible\, and to come up with sugg
estions for further work that are aimed at address
ing the business needs more fully or more successf
ully than the industrial mathematicians solutions.
\n\nAcademics from DAMTP will be available should
you need assistance.\n\nDay 3: In your groups\, yo
u should present your ideas for further work in a
way that explains (in a convincing way) what the p
ossible industrial benefits of their suggested app
roach would be.\n\nYou should\, in your groups\, d
evelop a research proposal to solve a particular p
roblem that you will need to present to the 'custo
mer' in a compelling way.
