DESCRIPTION:First I discuss anomalies in heterotic compactifications. I ar
 gue that anomalies will generically not be universal\, and illustrate this
  point by an explicit example of a heterotic orbifold blowup. Then\, I inv
 estigate the origin of discrete (R and non-R) symmetries on smooth Calabi-
 Yau manifolds via an GLSM approach.\n\n
