DESCRIPTION:The summer of 1807 was an important point in the British war e
ffort against Napoleonic France. The new British government sought to retu
rn to a European based strategy following a period of isolation under the
previous administration. However\, the defeat of Britain's allies and the
subsequent Treaty of Tilsit\, which saw French influence extend across Eur
ope\, left Britain without a foothold on the continent. This paper will ex
amine the role of intelligence in influencing British war policy in this n
ew climate\, focussing on the Northern Theatre\, which was of primary stra
 tegic importance.
