DESCRIPTION:Forecasting and data assimilation of atmospheric c
omposition have become important activities at ECM
WF as part of the MACC project. MACC makes daily g
lobal forecasts and has produced a re-analysis of
atmospheric composition (2003-2010). Both data se
ts are freely available and can be used for campai
gn support\, provision of boundary conditions\, cl
imatological studies or model evaluation. We pres
ent the modelling system for reactive gases and ho
w it is used in the assimilation of satellite obse
rvations. We will discuss the benefit of data assi
milation using two examples: the forecast of the s
evere pollution caused by fires in Russia in 2010
and the forecast of volcanic SO2 plumes
