DESCRIPTION:The financial crisis has exposed shortcomings in s
 tandard economic theory and provided an impetus fo
 r new economic thinking. But the theoretical debat
 e in the wake of the crisis has been unduly constr
 ained by the terms of the Mainstream approach to e
 conomic theory. Professor Sheila Dow will highligh
 t some of the Mainstream’s failings and present th
 e compelling case for an inclusive\, Pluralist app
 roach to the study and teaching of economics.\nAbo
 ut the speaker\n\nSheila Dow is Emeritus Professor
  of Economics at the University of Stirling and co
 -Convener of Scottish Centre for Economic Methodol
 ogy. She has worked previously as an economist wit
 h the Bank of England and the Government of Manito
 ba and as an advisor on monetary policy to the UK 
 Treasury Select Committee. She has published in th
 e areas of methodology\, the history of economic t
 hought (especially Hume\, Smith and Keynes)\, mone
 y and banking and regional finance. Recent books i
 nclude Economic Methodology: An Inquiry\, OUP\, 20
 02\, and A History of Scottish Economic Thought\, 
 Routledge\, 2006\, co-edited\, with Alexander Dow.
  Her new book\, Foundations for New Economic Think
 ing: a collection of essays\, will be published by
  Palgrave Macmillan in spring 2012.
