DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be on Thursday\, 8 March 201
 2\, 5.00-7.00pm when Professor David Baguley will 
 be reading his paper entitled 'Zola's War and Peac
 e: On _La Débâcle_'. Prof. Baguley's paper will be
  followed by questions and discussion\, and the me
 eting will conclude with a glass of wine/juice at 
 6.45pm. \n\nRegistration is not required\, and the
  event is free and open to all.\n\n*_La Débâcle_* 
 was Zola’s most successful novel from the time of 
 its publication (1892) and for several years there
 after. This talk will explore the complex generic 
 process of its creation\, examine its themes and t
 echniques\, and assess its originality and its con
 tribution to the genre of the war novel.\n\n*"Davi

  Professor in the French Department of the Univers
 ity of Western Ontario and Emeritus Professor and

 anguages and Cultures at Durham University. He has
  published and edited several books\, notably the 
 11th volume of _Emile Zola: Œuvres complètes: La F
 ortune d'Octave Mouret\, 1882-1883: présentation\,
  notices\, chronologie et bibliographie_ (Nouveau 
 Monde\, 2005)\, _Napoleon III and His Regime: An E
 xtravaganza_ (Louisiana State University Press\, 2
 000) and _Le Naturalisme et ses genres_ (Paris: Na
 than\, 1995). He is also the author of numerous ar
 ticles\, mainly in the field of nineteenth-century
  French literature\, culture and history\, with sp
 ecial reference to the works of Emile Zola and the
