DESCRIPTION:The human ear is an amazing organ that fulfils two vital senso
ry functions – hearing and balance. However\, most of the anatomical ear
is unfamiliar to us as it is encased in bone\, deep within the skull. In
this talk\, Dr Phil Cox will discuss the inner workings of the ear in both
humans and other vertebrates\, and explore how such a complex structure h
as evolved. He will also examine why these senses don’t always work perf
ectly – why do we start to lose our hearing as we get older\, how does d
isease affect our sense of balance\, and why does the room start to spin w
hen we drink too much alcohol?
