DESCRIPTION:In post-conflict states like Rwanda where very lit
tle is known about the association between disabil
ity and deprivation\, disabled young people are pa
rticularly vulnerable and frequently forgotten. It
is not surprising then that studies on the effect
s of disability and deprivation on the educational
and social outcomes of youth are rather sparse.
Fewer still are studies on the educational experie
nces of rural disabled youth. Drawing on qualitati
ve methods\, this paper examines the educational e
xperiences of rural disabled youth in Rwanda’s onl
y inclusive secondary school. It explores the barr
iers to their politically promised development\, t
he creative and collaborative coping strategies di
sabled youth employ in their educational journeys\
, and the challenge barriers pose to their advance
ment. This study fills a significant gap in the li
terature by highlighting the context-specific fact
ors (e.g. poverty and disability) and forces (e.g.
  family and religion/culture) that enable and/or d
isable the development of disabled young people’s
 educational experiences.
