DESCRIPTION:Stimulated by the groundbreaking work of Hodgkin and Huxley ma
ny laboratories in the 60s\nwere trying to understand the mechanistic basi
s of permeability changes in biological membranes. A\nvariety of mechanism
s were hotly debated. Typical signatures of ion channel gating had been ob
served in\nartificial bimolecular lipid membranes (e.g. gramicidin channel
s in the Haydon laboratory). Bert Sakmann\nand myself set out to proof the
ion channel concept by measuring ion currents in small membrane\npatches.
Developing the 'patch clamp technique' we actually succeeded in doing so.
With this tool in hand\na variety of ion channel properties emerged. Thes
e are now common place\, but some of them were quite\nsurprising at that t
 ime.
