DESCRIPTION:Structural Engineering of The Shard\n\nA skyscraper under cons
 truction at London Bridge\, when completed in 2012 The Shard will be the t
 allest building in the European Union and the 45th-tallest building in the
  world. Designed by structural engineers WSP and architect Renzo Piano for
  Sellar Properties\, The Shard comprises 28 storeys of offices\, 13 storey
 s of apartments\, four storeys of restaurants and a 19-storey hotel. It is
  surmounted by a 60m tall spire containing a public viewing gallery\, brin
 ging the total height to 310m (1\,017 ft). This talk will include the hist
 ory and constraints of the site and focus on the tower’s structural aspe
 cts - its design\, construction and unusual features. Roma Agrawal is a Se
 nior Structural Engineer at WSP London\, and has been part of The Shard’
 s team since the early stages of the design. Amongst her responsibilities 
 was the design of the raft foundation\, the office floors and the 60m tall
  spire.
