DESCRIPTION:The worldwide demand for electrical power continue
s to grow\, even if the rate of growth has slowed
in developed countries. The generation of electri
cal power releases large quantities of carbon diox
ide into the atmosphere and\, even if there is unc
ertainty about the precise consequences of this\,
the effects may not be entirely desirable. Theref
ore\, there is a great push to generate ‘clean’ po
wer by means such as wind turbines. The presentati
on will look broadly at the generation of power fr
om wind and waves\, drawing on the presenters own
experiences. The talk will cover the strengths\,
and weaknesses\, of these technologies\, and offer
a view of their prospects.\n\nRichard is an elect
rical engineer with an interest in renewable energ
y generation and energy efficiency of electrical a
ppliances. Current research focuses on low mainten
ance generators for wind turbines\; linear generat
ors for wave power and energy efficient power conv
ersion for power supplies and electric appliances
 such as compact fluorescent light
