DESCRIPTION:Organic light emitting displays (OLED) are beginning to be fou
 nd in smartphones and in the next few years the technology will migrate to
  flat panel televisions. The commercialisation of OLED technology into low
  cost lighting will require further development of basic device performanc
 e and low cost manufacturing methods. In this talk the history of OLED tec
 hnology and the developments that are being undertaken at the Technology D
 evelopment Centre in Godmanchester will be presented. The particular focus
  will be on the application of OLED technology to lighting and the technic
 al and commercial reasons why this technology could meet our future lighti
 ng needs.\n\nJulian Carter received a BA degree in Natural Sciences from t
 he University of Cambridge and a PhD in Microelectronics from the Universi
 ty of Southampton. Initially he worked on the development of processes for
  silicon based devices but since 1996 has been involved in the development
  of polymer electroluminescent devices. He is currently Director of New Te
 chnology and working to commercialise low cost manufacturing processes for
  lighting and display products. He has authored or co-authored 30 papers a
 nd filed more than 40 patents.\n\nThe talk should last for around an hour 
 followed by a look at the cleanrooms from the viewing corridor.  Tea\, cof
