climate change at King-George Island - Doris Abele (AWI)

DESCRIPTION:The coastline and the islands of the Western Antarctic Peninsu
la represent key areas immediately and most visibly affected by glacial re
treat and melting\, due to global climate warming. Although it is clear th
at coastal fresh water and sediment transport have increased both in lengt
h and volume\, it is not clear how the sub-glacial and land run-off dynami
cs will change over time.\n\nIMCOAST combines different physico-hydrograph
ical\, sedimentological\, geochemical and biological proxies to investigat
e past\, ongoing and future climate related changes of land ice masses and
sedimentary run-off and their effects on coastal benthic and pelagic ecos
ystems in the King George Island coastal area.\n\nThis international resea
rch programme features a multidisciplinary approach involving geo- and bio
 logical sciences\, field investigations\, remote sensing and modelling\, a
s well as knowledge into the hydrographical and biological history of the
marine coastal ecosystems of the Western Antarctic Peninsula region.\n\nOb
jectives\n\n* To quantify variability and changes in fresh water budgets i
n coastal ecosystems and to provide the physical boundary conditions for g
eochemical\, sedimentological and biophysical research\n* Understand the e
ffect of glacial retreat on sub-glacial and land run-off dynamics at in th
e past and present\n* Analyze the effects of the current climate change on
coastal pelagic ecosystems\n* Analyze carbon recycling in the sediment su
rface of coastal systems with and without impact of sedimentation\, and th
e bentho-pelagic coupling in KGI coastal food webs\n* Evaluate impact and
strength of late Holocene warm phases on the KGI coastal system\n
