DESCRIPTION:In today's Internet\, there is an ever increasing diversity in
the form of heterogeneous client devices\, new network services\, and div
erse user applications. This talk presents two systems -- Catnap and Vigil
ante -- that add more intelligence at the network edge to address various
problems caused by this increased diversity.\nCatnap buffers data at typic
al home middleboxes (e.g.\, wireless access points) *during* data transfer
s\, allowing mobile devices to sleep for significant duration of time with
little or no impact on transfer times. This results in up to 2-5x improve
ment in battery life for typical mobile devices. Vigilante turns these hom
e middleboxes into personal data centers for storing and distributing soci
al networking content within a social community. This results in better pe
rformance for end-users and reduced cost for the service provider.
