DESCRIPTION:The ideas of quantum criticality have proven a powerful unifyi
ng tool for a broad range of strongly correlated quantum systems. I will r
eview the basic notions underlying quantum criticality and the different t
ypes of systems to which they apply.\n\nI will concentrate in particular u
pon quantum criticality in metals. Although the term quantum criticality w
as first coined in the study of such systems\, there is strong evidence fr
om both experiment and theory that metallic quantum critical points are in
trinsically unstable. I will describe a recently developed approach to und
erstanding this instability in terms of quantum order-by-disorder.\n\nI wi
ll briefly compare this to other techniques such as the critical nodal su
rface and the remarkable AdS/CFT correspondence. I will end with some spec
ulations about the relationship between these various approaches and the d
irection in which a synthesis might eventually be found.
