DESCRIPTION:This paper introduces CIEL\, a universal execution engine\nfor
  distributed data-flow programs. Like previous\nexecution engines\, CIEL m
asks the complexity of distributed\nprogramming. Unlike those systems\, a
 CIEL job\ncan make data-dependent control-flow decisions\, which\nenables
it to compute iterative and recursive algorithms.\nWe have also developed
Skywriting\, a Turingcomplete\nscripting language that runs directly on CI
EL.\nThe execution engine provides transparent fault tolerance\nand distri
bution to Skywriting scripts and highperformance\ncode written in other pr
ogramming languages.\nWe have deployed CIEL on a cloud computing\nplatform
\, and demonstrate that it achieves scalable performance\nfor both iterati
ve and non-iterative algorithms.\n\nThe paper is at http://www.cl.cam.ac.u
 k/~dgm36/publications/2011-murray2011ciel.pdf.\n\nThis is a practice talk
 for NSDI 2011 (http://www.usenix.org/events/nsdi11/index.html).
