DESCRIPTION:We study the intrinsic spin Hall effect (SHE) and \nanomalous
Hall effect (AHE) in transition metals. We argue \nthat (1) the intrinsic
mechanism can be understood as an \norbital Aharonov-Bohm effect and (2) t
he origin of the \nSHE and AHE is the "orbital" Hall effect and\, based o
n \nit\, the magnitude and the sign of the SHE and AHE are \nsemiquantitat
ively understood. The sign change of SHE with\nthe increase of the atomic
number predicted by the present\ntheory has recently been confirmed experi
mentally\, implying\nthat the intrinsic mechanism indeed works in transiti
 on \nmetals.
