DESCRIPTION:We give a new local characterization of the Local Langlands\nC
 orrespondence\, using deformation spaces of p-divisible groups\, and show 
 its\nexistence by a comparison with the cohomology of some Shimura varieti
 es.\nThis reproves results of Harris-Taylor on the compatibility of local 
 and\nglobal correspondences\, but completely avoids the use of Igusa varie
 ties and\ninstead relies on the classical method of counting points a la L
 anglands and\nKottwitz. Further\, we have a new proof of bijectivity of th
 is\ncorrespondence\, relying on a description of the inertia-invariant nea
 rby\ncycles in certain situations.
