DESCRIPTION:The automatic analysis of learner language can play a role in
the annotation of learner\ncorpora and in intelligent language tutoring sy
stems. In this talk\, I first want to raise\nsome questions about the natu
re of the linguistic categories which are appropriate for\nlearner languag
e under different perspectives\, and which role the context\, explicit\nta
sks\, and learner modeling play for the interpretation of learner language
. Then the\ntalk moves from analyzing form to evaluating aspects of meanin
 g. I discuss our work\nin the CoMiC project on automatically evaluating th
e meaning of learner answers\nto reading comprehension questions\, for whi
ch we explore which linguistic\nrepresentations and comparison strategies
are effective and robust enough to evaluate\nmeaning in the face of signif
 icant well-formed and ill-formed variation.
