DESCRIPTION:Fossil evidence of Miocene apes from several localities in Eur
ope suggest a genetic connection with the African ape and human lineage. W
hile a European origin of this lineage may seem surprising\, it helps to e
xplain the appearance of several key adaptations of the great apes\, inclu
ding upright posture and increased brain size. In this talk David Begun d
iscusses the evidence for African apes in Europe and the possible local se
lective pressures that lead to these great ape evolutionary innovations. M
