DESCRIPTION:Many firms are connected to the government through their senio
r leaders holding or having previously held senior positions in government
. These political ties offer the potential for resource transfers and pref
erential treatment for connected firms\, but come at the costs of establis
hing and maintaining such ties. Do firms gain from political ties? And how
do these benefits evolve when the economic environment and institutional
structure undergo significant change? This presentation will draw primaril
y from two studies of business-government political ties in China.
