DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will highlight the utility of theoretical model
s in\nunderstanding two keys steps in the development of the visual system
.\nIn the first part of the talk\, I describe the structural development o
 f\nthe retina\; in particular\, how neurons arrange themselves into\nsemi-
regular spatial patterns. In the second part\, I describe potential mecha
nisms by which cells in the retina might project to the brain in a topogra
phic manner. Our hope is that these theoretical mechanisms can inform us
about the development not just of the visual system\, but of many parts of
  the nervous system.\n
