DESCRIPTION:Composed of alternating layers of mineral crystal tablets and
organic films\, nacre is renowned for its strength\, toughness and optical
iridescence. Using polymer mediated calcite thin film growth and layer-by
-layer coating of polyelectrolytes to deposit porous organic films\, we ar
e able to achieve a nacre-like material which include mineral bridges lead
ing to crystalline continuity. These multilayers promise interesting optic
 al and mechanical properties.
