DESCRIPTION:Liquid crystals are materials that have properties
 \, like\nthe ability to flow\, normally associated
with fluids and\nothers\, like optical birefringe
 nce\, normally associated\nwith crystalline solids
. They have symmetries that fill\nthe gap between
  the full rotational and translational\ninvariance
of homogeneous and isotropic fluids and the\nperi
odic structure of crystals. This talk will review
the\nmenagerie of liquid crystalline phases. It
will then\ndiscuss\, using examples from liquid cr
ystals\, those\nproperties of any condensed system
  - long-wave-length\nelasticity\, hydrodynamics\,
and topological defect structure\n- that can be de
 termined from symmetry alone.\n
