DESCRIPTION:Ice manifests in a variety of contexts\, ranging from Earth to
planetary environments. We first explore how and why ice is important in
different settings. Then we consider two ongoing studies\, one observation
al and one numerical\, which investigate different facets of Arctic sea ic
e properties. In the first\, we consider how unsupervised learning may be
used to characterize observations of sea ice floes. In the second\, we des
cribe how numerical simulations of viscous ice overlying an inviscid ocean
demonstrate how ice rheology and thickness relate to wave energy dissipat
ion. We conclude by considering how similar principles may extend to ice i
 n different environments.
