DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Over the past decades many genetic variants have bee
n identified that alter individuals’ responses to their medication resul
ting in ineffective treatment or adverse drug reactions. In England\, thro
ugh the NHS Network of Excellence in Pharmacogenomics\, we have developed
an implementation science program to adopt pharmacogenomics into routine c
linical use. This has focused on the type of genetic test\, the way that t
he data is transferred into an actionable format for the clinician\, and d
etermining the clinical outcomes of this intervention.\n\nIn this talk\, I
will discuss the clinical contexts of pharmacogenomics and how a new way
of presenting genomic data is required for adoption at scale that is accep
table to both patients and health professionals. I will explore the use of
point of care genetic testing and the potential for pre-emptive testing t
o improve medicines optimisation.\n\n\n\nBio: Bill is a clinician scientis
 t. Professor of Translational Genomic medicine at the University of Manche
ster and a Consultant in Clinical Genetics at the Manchester Centre for Ge
nomic Medicine. He has a multidisciplinary research program in the implem
entation of pharmacogenomics in clinical practice and is the lead of the N
HS England Network of Excellence in Pharmacogenomics and Medicines Optimis
ation. He is the immediate past President of the European Society of Human
  Genetics.\n
