DESCRIPTION:Approximately 30% of autistic people have complex additional s
upport needs\, sometimes referred to as ‘profound autism’. This group
are consistently under-represented in research studies meaning we know lea
st about those potentially most in need of evidence-based support. My rese
arch focuses on how we can develop more inclusive approaches to enable bro
ader research participation by autistic people with complex support needs.
In this presentation\, I will discuss insights into some of the ethical c
omplexities of working with this group drawn from a co-produced study\, wo
rking with researchers\, families\, school-based professionals and autisti
c people. I will consider some of the challenges experienced by researcher
s in the field and suggest approaches to address these in practice.
